It’s finally summer, and families everywhere are preparing for the vacation season. While COVID-19 is still a huge factor in people’s ability and desire to travel, there is one mode of travel that has increased in popularity over the past year—road trips. From college students moving back home to study remotely, to avid travellers exploring new and exciting parts of our country, millions of people hit the road for hours-long trips in lieu of the more dangerous, albeit much faster option of flying. If you’re gearing up for a road trip of your own, keep in mind that your health isn’t the only factor in your safety. You need to give your car a checkup too.
Road Trip Readiness Checklist
- Change Oil: If you haven’t had an oil change within the last few thousand miles, replacing both your oil and your filter is a good way to help keep your engine clean and running smoothly.
- Check Tires: Before you drive hundreds of miles on your tires, it’s important to check their air pressure and the wear of their tread. If you stick a penny into your tread and can see the entirety of Lincoln’s head, it’s time to get a new set of wheels.
- Double Check Spare Tire/Jack: Because checking your tires on the front end of the trip won’t protect you from damage done while on the road, always remember to confirm that your spare tire, jack, and other tire changing tools are all in the car.
- Prepare Emergency Kit: Even when you’re not travelling across the states, it’s a good idea to keep an emergency kit inside your car. Items for this kit will vary depending on the climate of your home town and wherever you travel, but it’s universally recommended to have: jumper cables, a multi-purpose tool, a flashlight, a blanket, non-perishable foods and drinking water.
